Why did my hair turn orange, and how do I fix it?
Orange hair is a stage of lift, not a mistake you cannot undo. A Utah colourist explains the pigment sequence, what blue shampoo can and cannot do, and when it needs a salon.
Orange is not a colour someone put on your hair. It is a stage your hair passed through on the way to blonde and then stopped at, usually because the lightener ran out of time, strength or room to work.
That is the good news. Orange is a known point in a known order, and once you know where you stopped you know what is left to do.
The sequence
The sequence is the whole problem
Dark hair is not brown pigment sitting on top of pale hair. It holds warm pigment underneath, and lightener removes that pigment in a fixed order. Nothing skips a step.
Every head of hair walks that ladder in the same direction. Where it stops depends on your starting depth, the strength used, how long it processed and how much colour is already on the hair.

The only stage that will tone to a clean beige, ash or icy blonde.
Potential solutions
What actually works.
If it is a warm gold, tone it
Gold is close enough to the end of the ladder that a professional demi permanent gloss can neutralise it in twenty minutes without any more lift.
If it is orange, it needs more lift first
Toner is not paint. Putting an ash toner over orange gives you a muddy, slightly greenish orange that fades back to orange in three washes. The orange has to be lifted through gold to pale yellow before any tone will hold.
If it is banded, it needs to be worked in sections
Orange mid lengths with lighter ends means different histories on one strand. Those bands are lifted and toned separately, which is the part that genuinely needs a colourist.
If the hair is fragile, it needs two sittings
Where the hair will not safely take the rest of the lift in one day, we lift what is safe, tone it liveable, and finish it two to four weeks later.
What to avoid
The things that make it worse.
- Blue or purple shampoo as a fix. It deposits a small amount of tone on the surface. It will soften brassiness on pale yellow blonde and it will do essentially nothing to true orange.
- A second box of lightener on top of the first, on the same day. That is where breakage happens rather than blonde.
- A dark box dye over the orange to hide it. It looks solved for a week, then it fades back to orange with a layer of dark pigment on top, and it doubles the correction.
- Home colour removers followed immediately by bleach. The hair swells, and the second process lands on hair that has not settled.

If your hair is orange right now, wash it and do nothing else. Every extra product you put on it before the consultation is one more layer we have to work around, and it is usually what turns a one sitting fix into a two sitting fix.

Straight answers.
- Will purple shampoo fix orange hair?
- No. Purple cancels yellow, not orange. On orange hair it makes almost no visible difference. Blue tones sit closer to orange and can soften it very slightly, but neither will correct it.
- Can you fix orange hair in one appointment?
- Often yes, if the hair is healthy and the orange is even. Where it is banded or the hair has been lightened repeatedly, we book two sittings and tell you that up front.
