Icy platinum blonde hair finished on a light studio background in Utah

Can I go from dark to blonde in one appointment?

Sometimes, often not, and a colourist who tells you the truth about that is protecting your hair. How dark to blonde is planned, staged and priced in Utah.

The honest answer is that it depends on what is already on your hair, and often the answer is no. We would rather say that out loud than find out halfway through.

Integrity comes before the photograph. That is one of our standards, and dark to blonde is the service that tests it most.

The sequence

The sequence is the whole problem

Going from dark to blonde means walking the entire pigment ladder in one pass: red, orange, gold, pale yellow. Each stage takes time, and time is what stresses the hair.

Virgin dark hair can often make that trip in a day. Hair with box colour, old black, henna or several rounds of lightening usually cannot, and pushing it is how breakage happens.

  1. 01

    Virgin dark hair

Frequently one long sitting, six hours plus, ending in a soft blonde rather than icy.

  2. 02

    Previously coloured dark

Two sittings, two to four weeks apart, because artificial pigment has to come out before natural pigment lifts.

  3. 03

    Black box dye or henna

Three sittings or more, and a strand test before anyone promises anything.

  4. 04

    Fragile or over processed

We build in the blonde over months, and treat the hair between.

Potential solutions

What actually works.

Root shadow and blended blonde

Leaving depth at the root means less lift, a softer grow out and a result that reads expensive rather than stripped.

Balayage or a lived in blonde

Freehand lightening gets you visibly blonde in one visit while keeping the fragile mid lengths out of it.

A staged plan

Two or three booked sittings that each look finished, so you are never walking around mid project.

A warmer target shade

Bronde, honey and beige sit one rung lower than icy and cost your hair far less to hold.

What to avoid

The things that make it worse.

  • Booking the appointment from a photo alone. The photo is the goal, not the plan.
  • Any colourist who promises platinum in one sitting on box dyed hair without a strand test.
  • Home lightening the week before to get a head start. It changes the canvas and usually adds a sitting.
  • Going icy and then wanting a beach wave the same week. Fresh platinum needs a fortnight of quiet before heat styling becomes a habit.

How we recreate it

Step by step, in the salon.

  1. 01

    Free consultation

History, strand test and a written plan with the number of sittings.

  2. 02

    Sitting one

Lift what is safe, tone it into a shade you are happy to be seen in.

  3. 03

Two to four weeks of care

Bond treatment at home, no other colour on the hair.

  4. 04

    Sitting two

Take it the rest of the way and set the final tone.

  5. 05

    Maintenance rhythm

Foils every eight to twelve weeks, gloss in between.

Laila's pro tip

When somebody asks me for platinum and their hair says no, I aim for the blonde their hair can hold and make the cut and the finish do the rest. Nobody has ever walked out disappointed because a colour was two shades warmer. Plenty have walked out disappointed because their ends came off.

Common questions

Straight answers.

How much does dark to blonde cost?
It is booked as colour transformation time, $70 to $115 an hour by level, and most plans land between $400 and $900 across one or two sittings. You get your range at the consultation.
Will my hair be damaged?
Lightening always costs the hair something. Our job is to keep that cost small enough that the hair still behaves, which is exactly why we sometimes say two sittings.
